Gene Volchenko is an associate in the firm’s litigation practice, where he represents clients in complex intellectual property disputes, including patent, trademark, trade dress, and copyright litigation. His practice also includes inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, with a particular focus on medical device technologies.
Gene has experience handling all phases of litigation, from pre-suit investigations through trial. He develops infringement and invalidity analyses, drafts dispositive motions, manages discovery, and works closely with expert witnesses. He has represented clients in federal court and before administrative bodies, leveraging his background in biomedical engineering to analyze technical aspects of asserted patents and relevant technologies.
Before joining the firm, Gene practiced at an intellectual property boutique, where he litigated cases involving a range of technologies, including medical devices, software, and consumer products. During law school, he served as an editor for the Intellectual Property Journal and was a student volunteer at the Patent Hub, where he assisted with prior art searches and invention intakes. Gene also worked as a Judicial Extern to the Honorable Patricia O’Brien Sheahan at the Circuit Court of Cook County where he gained experience in court proceeding and judicial opinion drafting.
Gene earned his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was named to the Dean’s List, held leadership roles in the Intellectual Property Law Society. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a concentration in cell and tissue engineering. Before engineering school, Gene was a Staff Sergeant in the Israel Defense Forces.
A fluent speaker of Hebrew and Russian, Gene also dedicates time to pro bono work, assisting individuals seeking to expunge or seal their criminal records through the Greater Chicago Legal Clinic.
