The Sheridan Ross law firm and five of its attorneys have been recognized by Managing Intellectual Property as a part of its annual IP Stars survey. The survey covers more than 80 countries and rankings are based on extensive research among IP practitioners carried out over six months.
As a firm, we are incredibly proud of the individual attorneys highlighted, as well as the collective work of the team to help secure this prestigious ranking. Individual attorneys highlighted in this year’s survey include: Todd Blakely, Rob Brunelli, Bruce Kugler, John Posthumus and Sabrina Stavish.
Following is the MIP analysis and comments from clients, competitors and industry experts regarding the work of our attorneys and the firm as a whole:
Tracing its roots back to 1954, Sheridan Ross is a full-service, Denver-based IP boutique of more than 50 professionals. “Sheridan has a strong IP presence here,” a competitor contends. Of its 47 attorneys, three hold PhDs. They are known for their deep technical experience with computer software, biochemistry, engineering, molecular biology, and neuroscience, among other areas of expertise. The firm is famed for its investments in client relationships, as several of them are longstanding alliances that have strengthened over the decades and extended to the present day. Patent and trademark prosecution remain the pinnacle of the firm’s success; it processes approximately 440 every year. Furthermore, Sheridan boasts a considerable practice regarding computer software development and licensing agreements.
Additionally, the firm enjoys a favorable reputation for its litigation capabilities. Peers cite the excellence of John Posthumus, with one calling him “the driving force” at the firm. He bears more than two decades of experience litigating complex patent and trademark disputes as well as with sophisticated IP counseling. Clients attest to the high quality of services he and his colleagues provide. One remarks, “Given Sheridan’s location, they are very cost-effective. We feel we are getting big-city, big-firm talent at a significant discount. In addition, the attorneys staffed on our matters are very responsive and typically get back to us within hours. We have come to rely on them for most of our soft-IP issues.”
Robert Brunelli heads the litigation practice. He is also the firm’s co-president and co-secretary. His leadership in the field goes virtually uncontested, and, with more than 20 years of experience in his wake, his services are regularly enlisted by clients that range from start-ups to multinational corporations. Peers and clients alike spare no praise for attorney Sabrina Stavish, who focuses her practice on brand management and strategy in the trademark, copyright, and domain name arenas. “If you ask people around here, they will tell you she’s one of the household names in the market,” admits a peer. Clients corroborate this claim: “Sabrina is one of the smartest IP attorneys I have worked with in my career. Her advice is always on target, succinct, and business focused. Sabrina understands the challenges of working in-house.”
Clients continue in their accolades: “They are the most responsive firm that I use. They provide a level of expertise and understanding of our needs that make them our go-to IP firm. When coupled with their cost effectiveness, they provide a great value proposition.” Another notes, “The firm works directly with some of our top inventors.” He further attests to Sheridan’s “outstanding, responsive, cost-effective service.” Yet a third concludes, “I rarely ever question invoices from Sheridan.”
